Melanomas can occur anywhere on the body, not only in areas that get a lot of sun. Our focus this month is MoleMap, with WPRS proud to have recently brought this innovative technology to Mount Gambier.

Over 20 years ago, MoleMap’s founding doctors noticed that many skin can­cers weren’t being picked up in routine checks. Count­less moles were being removed unnec­es­sar­i­ly, while many oth­er — far more dan­ger­ous – moles were being missed. With Aus­tralia hav­ing one of the high­est rates of skin can­cer in the world, this sys­tem need­ed to change.

Hence, they pio­neered Australia’s first ded­i­cat­ed skin can­cer clin­ics, focused only on detect­ing and diag­nos­ing melanoma and oth­er skin can­cers. MoleMap was also the first to com­bine skin can­cer exper­tise and the lat­est tech­nol­o­gy to cre­ate a patent­ed skin-map­ping sys­tem designed to spot skin can­cers ear­li­er — and more accurately.

In order to better support our Dermatology service, WPRS became the only regional provider in the greater Warrnambool region since 2017 and greater Mt Gambier since 2022. These days, experts around the world use the accuracy of MoleMap’s technology and data to further advance melanoma research, educate other specialists and, ultimately, to save lives.

At your appoint­ment you’ll be seen by a Registered Nurse Melanog­ra­ph­er who will take the time to thor­ough­ly check your skin from head-to-toe. They’ll help you feel at ease through­out the whole process. Moles are then imaged with dermoscopic cameras to look inside the mole’s internal structures.

After your appoint­ment your imaged spots will be secure­ly for­ward­ed to one of our Der­ma­tol­o­gists who will review your spots and pro­vide a diag­nos­tic report which includes any rec­om­men­da­tions for treatment.
