Our physical appearance can play a large role in how we perceive and project ourselves and many of us suffer from stubborn areas of fat on the body that have not responded to diet and exercise. What can be done to safely and effectively address this concern? Our focus this month is liposuction and liposculpture with WPRS proud to have brought innovative VASER technology to Warrnambool.
VASER stands for ‘Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance’. It is a liposuction technique that uses ultrasound waves to break up and liquefy fat cells, making them easier to extract. The liquefied fat can then be drawn out through a cannula, resulting in less damage to nearby tissues compared to traditional liposuction.
VASER can be used to improve virtually any pocket of fat that is resistant to diet and exercise such as the backs of the arms, the love handles, the thighs, the abdomen, the neck/jaw-line and can also treat Gynecomastia (male breast development). The procedure may even be combined with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or thigh lift
Under general anaesthetic, your surgeon makes small incisions through which numbing solution is administered under the skin. The solution also acts as a medium for high-energy ultrasound to break down fatty tissue. To disguise any scarring from this surgical procedure, incisions are placed in discreet areas such as in the belly button or near the bikini line.
Next, a small ultrasound probe or cannula is inserted under the skin to dissolve the fat cells and make the suction process easier. VASER Liposuction transforms the “brick” of fat into a soft material (much like melting a slab of butter) to facilitate the removal of unwanted fat.
The three main advantages obtained after having performed this step:
- 54% more skin tightening than traditional liposuction, due to the thermal effect of the VASER stimulating a surge in collagen production in the skin and remaining tissue.1
- More fat cells can be removed with less fatigue to the surgeon.2
- VASER produces less bleeding and therefore less trauma to the tissues.3
To promote a speedy recovery and prevent complications, patients are fitted with a compression garment before being discharged and are monitored through regular follow-up appointments with our caring WPRS staff. Swelling typically subsides within a few weeks and by this time, the treated area should look less bulky. Within several months, the treated area can be expected to have a leaner appearance.
VASER liposuction and liposculpture in no way removes the need to be healthy, but is an effective supplementary treatment for those already taking care of themselves through diet and exercise.
Our expert Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons Dr Robert Toma and Dr Robert Capstick offer VASER liposuction and liposculpture and are available for consultation to see if this treatment is suitable for you. For smaller areas of concern, for example, “double chin”, our Skin Lab by WPRS team also offer Ultraformer III for skin and tissue tightening of the face, neck and body.
